When students have the opportunity to connect learning across subjects, their understanding becomes deeper and more meaningful.
Recently, Kent Primary School Art Teacher Mrs. Bell and Fourth Grade Teacher Mrs. Constantinides partnered to bring fourth-grade Social Studies to life through an engaging cross-curricular learning experience.
As part of their study of the Iroquois and Algonquian peoples, students learned about where these Native American groups lived and how their homes reflected their environments and ways of life. They then applied this knowledge in art class by constructing detailed wigwams and longhouses. After building the structures, students used paper mâché to create the exterior of their homes and finished their projects by incorporating Native American-inspired symbols into their designs.
This hands-on collaboration allowed students to creatively demonstrate their learning while strengthening their understanding of an important fourth-grade curriculum topic. The result was a collection of thoughtful and impressive projects that showcased both historical understanding and artistic creativity.
