"Today I hurry off to school,
To work and learn and play.
I'm in a brand new grade this year.
Oh, what a happy day!"

Miss Wanaselja, retired Carmel Music Teacher recently visited KPS Music Classes.  She was delighted to share instruments, artifacts, songs and stories with the students, allowing them to handle items from other cultures around the world. Click on the KPS photo gallery to see the students learning to play teak frogs handcrafted by the hill tribes of Thailand.

The Fourth Grade students learned about Slavery this year.  They studied the challenges slaves faced, the horror they endured, and the process they used escape to freedom.  The students learned about the Underground Railroad along with what the slaves went through to become free.  Many books were read about slavery quilts, why they were made, how they were used, and how they helped slaves escape.  The students then made their own, "Freedom Quilt".  Each student had two quilt patches.  On one they drew a picture which showed a path to freedom.  On the other they wrote about their design.  Each patch shows a way to that helped slaves escape.  Thank you, Mrs. Mueller for sewing our squares together to create such a beautiful quilt!

Brazilian Celebration: Mrs. Burnell & Mr. Tompkins' turned their classroom into a jungle. Parents were invited in to view rainforest animal reports, poems and watercolor drawings. Children created Brazilian brochures, rainsticks in Art Class with Mrs. Berardi.  The main event, a recreation of the rainforest reflecting all 4 layers. Music & slideshows were played.  Mr. Tompkins' mother-in-law treated all the guests with homemade Brazilian fare from her native country. Come look at our photos in the Photo Gallery.

Mrs. Burnell & Mr. Tompkins' Class enjoyed a biography presentation in late May. Children selected a person they wished to learn about. The information they collected was put into a Power Point Presentation. They dressed in character and presented to their classmates. View our slides in the Photo Gallery!

Olympics of Visual Art
From Left: Jody Gordon, Mrs. Berardi, Gladimir Jean-Jacques, Nick Palazzo, Gabriel Harrison, Kayla Rivalsi and Justin Perez.
Six of our fourth grade students headed up to Saratoga Springs on April 15th to compete in the Olympics of Visual Art. They won second place in the competition and each felt very proud to bring home a ribbon. In order to compete in the competition the students had to create a mythical creature using different drawing techniques and a variety of art mediums. They worked hard for weeks leading up to the event making the creature and documenting their progress.  The competition also consisted of a “Spontaneous Problem”. The problem was to pretend they were a Reptilian and Amphibian expert who discovers a new species. They then had to illustrate a visual interpretation of their discovery. The smaller drawing is the solution to the spontaneous problem. The received no help from any adult making these great works of art. They did an amazing job and make everyone here at Kent Primary feel proud. Thank you, Mrs. Berardi!

Kudo's to our cafeteria staff! They have received the Commissioner’s Gold Award for Operational Excellence for 2009 award from the Putnam County Health Department.

Our kindergarten through fourth students are a reflection of the strong, vibrant community that we all share. Our teachers are dedicated to preparing our children to be leaders in the world outside our doors.

School Store KPS is appreciative of the wonderful parent volunteers who run our school store. It is open every Friday during lunch/recess from 11:30-1:30. Items sold are pencils, crayons, folders, sharpeners, etc. All items are $1.00 or less.  Thank you volunteers! If interested in volunteering please email Mrs. Meehan @ kiffernini@comcast.net.

Recycling Program

Capri Sun Juice Wrappers earn money for KPS. The students at KPS are pitching in by recycling aluminum juice pouches.  If these convenient little pouches are thrown into the regular garbage, they will hang around for many thousands of years!  Kent Primary found an organization called Terracyle that will repurpose these juice pouches into neat things like tote bags, purses and even pencil cases.  The best part is that KPS receives 2 cents for each juice pouch.  Mrs. Peck's 1st grade students are in charge of collecting, rinsing and packaging the juice pouches.  We can use your help by collecting the pouches at home and sending them into us in September and throughout the year.  Here's how: 1. Please cut the top off just under the top seam (above the spot for the straw). 2. Rinse them out with just warm water. 3. Allow them to dry ouot before putting them in a Ziploc for us.  You can find out more by visiting the website: www.teracycle.net

Flag Day: Music Teacher Mrs. Schultz proudly leads an enjoyable sing along celebration! Ladies from the Carmel VFW Women's Auxillary and Mr. Heinchon and Mr. Imbo from the Carmel VFW attended the KPS Flag Day Assembly. They spoke to the students about the importance of our flag.  They also generously gave all of KP's students the gift of a miniature flag as a remembrance. Please view a short video clip in the Photo Gallery of our sing-along.

Mr. Johnson's class finalized their heritage unit by completing a family tree and creating a project about their family and traditions. We found that our ancestors came from a large variety of countries on four continents. The culmination of the unit was a feast with foods from our various cultures. A tasty trip around the world! Thanks to Mrs. Stenger & Mrs. Vacarro for all their hard work organizing our celebration! Watch our Video compliments of Mrs. Longo in KPS Photo Gallery plus photos in a Smilebox.

Mrs. Peck's 1st Graders have been busy collecting water bottle caps.

On the Radio! Yes, 2nd graders in Mrs. Byrd's class were on the radio. One of her student's, Sean Adams' father, is the weekly host for a Radio Show called "The Press Box" on www.lifesyletalkradio.com. Mr. Adams and radio partner, Ryan Demaria, permitted the class to be his guests on his talk show. Students wore headsets, spoke clearly into the microphones, were able to select the music played during breaks all while discussing the topic of Sports. Students remained quiet, showing respect, when the "On Air" sign was up.  It was a great learning experience for everyone. Thank you, Mr. Adams & Mr. Demaria!

Four KPS students were invited to participate in the first ever Elementary Honors Choir sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators Association. The choir rehearsed and performed a wide variety of songs and also participated in the first National Anthem Sing for the Conference General Session.  The event was held on April 9, 2010, in Hartford CT. The children spent weeks rehearsing and practicing the music. A great time was had by all! Thank you, Mrs. Schultz

If you have taken the time to stop & smell the flowers in front of KPS, thank Kohl's Dept. Store in Southeast!  All gratitude goes to a team of Kohl's employees & volunteers. The newly planted flowers are certainly appreciated!

From the Principal

We're off to a new school year full of Knowledge, Pride and Success! Websites are a true example of modern day technology which the schools can incorporate to keep parents in the know.  It is vitally important that parents be a part of this team for we are educating our children, the ones that we share between school and home.  Each one of us has an important role.  We cannot do the job without the other. At KPS, students learn the core subject areas of reading, writing, math, history and sciences, as well as the arts. But we also strive to teach the skills of problem- solving, critical thinking and teamwork, so they can be better prepared to deal with the global society ahead of them.  We hope some day that they will be designing the websites of the future. Please remember our motto KPS stands for Knowledge, Pride, Success.  Reinforce it at home as our partner.  When we all speak the same language, great things do happen.

Check out new Video's & Photos in KPS Photo Gallery!
